Dr Malcolm Glase MBBS, FRACS, FAOrthA is an Australian trained orthopaedic surgeon who specialises in hip and knee replacement and arthroscopic knee surgery. He completed his orthopaedic training in 1989 on the Australian Orthopaedic Association training program. Since 1990 he has performed over 6000 hip and knee replacements and uses the latest and most effective minimally invasive techniques, computer navigation and computer generated patient specific instruments. These methods assist to minimise post operative pain, enable early mobilisation, speed recovery and optimise patient outcomes.

Dr Glase specialises in Anterior Minimally Invasive Surgery (AMIS®) for total hip replacement.

He is Australia’s most experienced AMIS® hip surgeon and has successfully performed over 3000 anterior minimally invasive total hip replacements. He also has Australia’s largest series of bilateral AMIS® procedures with over 200 cases. AMIS® involves replacing the hip via the direct anterior approach. The surgical incision is made at the front of the hip joint. The approach is between two muscles, tensor fascia lata and rectus femoris. No muscles are cut and no nerves to the muscles are damaged. Whilst a small 6 – 8 cm incision is cosmetically attractive, it is the intermuscular and internervous nature of the approach that provides the advantages of this technique and make it truly minimally invasive. (See diagram 1 and 2)

The direct anterior approach

The major benefits of the anterior approach

Reduced operative blood loss

Less post-operative pain

Reduced dislocation rates

Rapid recovery times

Reduced hospital time

Better functional results

An Australian Pioneer

Dr Glase is recognised by his orthopaedic colleagues as the pioneer of this procedure in Australia after visiting leading French orthopaedic surgeon Dr Frederick Laude in Paris in 2007.

Dr Glase is a foundation member of the AMIS® Education Board and has been closely involved in the education, training and mentoring of many of the orthopaedic surgeons in Australia who now practice this technically demanding procedure.

Dr Glase is an International Reference Surgeon for AMIS® and is regularly visited by Australian and overseas orthopaedic surgeons wishing to observe and learn the AMIS® technique. He has presented his AMIS® results at both local and international orthopaedic clinical meetings.

According to the Australian National Joint Replacement Registry database he has a significantly lower revision rate for AMIS® compared to the national average for total hip replacement performed by any method.
